The Summerfield Fire Department was officially organized in 1951 and received its corporate charter on May 28, 1951. Shortly after, the department took a major step in protecting the community by purchasing its first fire truck—a 1951 Baker-American engine built on a Ford chassis—from Southern Fire Apparatus for $3,800.

With no station yet built, the truck was initially housed in a service bay at one of the member’s service stations until a dedicated fire station could be constructed. Despite humble beginnings, the department’s commitment to serving Summerfield was unwavering, and this first fire truck played a crucial role in protecting the town.

On March 16, 1990, the truck was purchased by Louis Hoffman for $1,000, ensuring its preservation. Recognizing its historical significance, a major restoration was undertaken in 1992 by Dixie Fire and Safety in Lenoir, NC, at a cost of $33,000.

Today, this historic fire engine is proudly housed at Station 9, where it serves as a cherished symbol of our department’s legacy and dedication to the community.
