 Smoke and CO Alarms (PDF)

  • If you don’t have smoke alarms, install them. If you do, keep them maintained.
  • Install CO (carbon monoxide) alarms in your home. CO is an odorless, colorless, poisonous gas that can be created by home heating equipment.
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms weekly, and change the batteries at least once a year.

 Fire Prevention and Safety Practices (PDF)

  • Have a family escape plan with a meeting place. Once you exit your home, DO NOT return.
  • Use candles only in a fireproof container and away from children. Do not leave them unattended.

 Supplemental Heating Devices (PDF)

  • Use heating devices according to manufacturer’s directions and never leave unattended.
  • Provide all heating devices with at least 3 feet of clear space, away from combustible materials.
  • Examine gas lines for punctures or splits. Check the connectors and valves for leaks.

 Chimneys and Fireplaces (PDF)

  • Clean and maintain chimneys, fireplaces and furnaces on a regular basis.
  • Burn dry, seasoned hard wood, and keep sparks and embers inside the fireplace with fire screens.
